Using Video Production to Engage Second Graders

Matthew Needleman is a second grade teacher and uses video and video production in the classroom to engage his students and get them interested in class and writing.  His goal it to help them become better critical thinkers.  Please watch his video.

Matthew also created a video to help teachers create their own video podcasts.  This video runs about 16 minutes and he discusses everything from storyboarding to shooting to equipment.

According to Matthew the video production project in his class is one of the big things his students remember and carry with them into the next grade.  Importantly, as a teacher, he was concerned that the video exercise had an impact on his student’s learning so he looked at the data for several years and discovered that it had a positive impact on learning with his students.   Matthew runs a website at http://www.needleworkspictures.com/vic/ and maintains a blog as well.  Please visit his site.

At Synergy Broadcast we are big believers in using technology in the classroom.  Our kids are growing up surrounded by technology in their daily lives outside of school and any opportunity educators have to integrate the things kids love with learning is something that can inspire them to see things they might not see in a pure lecture environment.  We are partial to video and video on demand because that’s what we do but as we find interesting articles, websites  and videos about other forms of technology we want to share them because teachers need to use a variety of tools with their students regardless of subject matter.
