IPv6 Launches June 6, 2012

Today, June 6, 2012 is a reboot (of sorts) of the Internet with a new addressing system. According to the experts we are going to run out of IP addresses. These are the numbers a device needs to access the Internet. This includes your desktop computer, laptop, smart phone, tablet or other device that needs the Internet to function.

Google and most of the major sites launched their version of IPv6 today but most of us don’t have to worry about it right now. You can click this link to see if your location is IPv6 ready.

Search Engine Land posted some information from Google on their blog along with a Google video (below) that explains a little about what’s going on. The guy in the video is Vint Cerf, one of the founders of the Internet (no Al Gore is not on the list).
