Should Undercover Boss Feature a Hospital CEO?

Have you watched the new show Undercover Boss on Sunday nights at 9/8 Central on CBS? It’s a great concept…largeUndercover Boss companies such as Waste Management, Hooters, White Castle and 7-11 are a few of the companies featured so far.  In each episode the CEO goes undercover and works in multiple lower level jobs to see what life is like on the front lines and learn how management decisions impact work, processes, productivity and employees’ personal lives. I find it to be a fascinating show as we get a chance to eavesdrop on these companies and watch the reactions from the CEO’s and later the employees they work with when they find out they trained or worked with the CEO.

I hope it doesn’t become too predictable because this will cause people to tune away and result in the show being cancelled. The last few episodes played in very much the same way and this can make a show boring.

I think it would be very interesting if they picked a CEO from a large hospital group to go undercover as a patient and watch him or her face the admissions process with insurance, deductibles and co-pays and potential payment agreements, followed by testing, meals, hours alone in the room with just the hospital TV, hours waiting for word on test results and finally discharge and billing. Wouldn’t this be a fascinating way to look at healthcare in the midst of the healthcare debate? What would the CEO think of the process in his or her hospital? What things would they change if they could? What things do they think are broken? What’s the impact of outside forces from insurance, government, HIPAA laws and other issues that may or may not impact the cost or experience?

Conversations with co-workers and friends that have spent time in the hospital over the last 3 months and related their experiences have sparked this idea. They all shared similar stories of both good and bad experiences and all thought their particular experience could have been improved in many areas. It’s important to point out that most of the comments were not centered on medical treatment but customer service and attention areas. No, food was not the number one topic.

Let’s hope the producers at Undercover Boss are thinking about this idea. It would make for “Must See TV!” What do you think? Please leave a comment.

one of the best shows would be on health care for everybody who can afford health care to watch somebody who is just making it. the hospital would be the best show ever i agree with another person who also suggested the hospital ceo. and since they are rich why would they be scared to do a show.
